Job Description: Legal Citation Specialist (Law Students)
Role Type: Contractor
Location: Remote
Opportunity Snapshot
What You'll Do: Review Bluebook citation-checking rubrics and create sample citation-checking tasks.
Requirements: Current or recent law school enrollment, hands-on experience with The Bluebook, and law journal or law review editing experience.
Job Summary
We are seeking law students and recent law graduates with law journal experience to support a legal citation project. Candidates with experience in cite-checking for a law review or law journal will apply their expertise to review citation guidelines, identify errors, and develop high-quality citation-checking tasks.
No prior AI experience is required. Strong knowledge of The Bluebook, attention to detail, and sound editorial judgment are essential for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Review existing Bluebook and pinpoint citation (pincite) grading rubrics to identify unclear, incomplete, or inconsistently applied rules.
- Identify citation edge cases that are not covered by existing rubrics and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Create sample citation-checking tasks by pairing source materials with citations containing realistic errors, along with corrected citations and explanations of the relevant rules.
- Develop tasks covering a range of citation types and difficulty levels, from basic formatting errors to complex pincite and source-support issues.
- Apply Bluebook rules consistently across all assigned submissions.
- Flag ambiguous cases to project coordinators rather than making undocumented assumptions.
- Complete assigned tasks on schedule while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current law student, preferably in the second or third year (2L or 3L), or a recent Juris Doctor (JD) graduate.
- Experience with a law review or law journal, preferably in cite-checking or source collection.
- Strong working knowledge of The Bluebook, including pincites, short forms, signals, and parentheticals.
- Ability to explain the reasoning behind citation errors and corrections clearly and accurately.
- Excellent attention to detail and consistency when reviewing complex legal citations.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
- Experience as a journal editor, articles editor, or executive editor is an advantage.
Selection Process
- Application: Apply for the role and complete the screening questions.
- AI Interview: Complete the interview to demonstrate your relevant skills and expertise to the client.
- Profile Review: The hiring team will review your profile and qualifications.
- Onboarding: The Talent Operations team will guide you through the onboarding process.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has practical law journal cite-checking experience, a strong command of Bluebook citation rules, and the ability to evaluate citations critically, explain corrections, and create accurate, well-structured legal citation tasks.
